Amidst the predictable wave of music blog hype, Melbourne, Australia’s contribution to indie dance music, Cut Copy, has released its sophomore album, In Ghost Colours. Although still technically unreleased in the States (the scheduled date is April 8th), the album is available for purchase on iTunes, as of March 22nd, and can be streamed on the band’s MySpace page (or, if you’re in Australia, you can get it there too).
For those unfamiliar to the band, In Ghost Colours will serve as a perfect introduction. Stylistically, the band draws from the dance pop traditions of the 1980’s, blending the electronic with the organic to produce a unique effervescence. If you want comparisons, think New Order, Depeche Mode, or even the Cars. Thankfully, Cut Copy, instead of merely imitating their predecessors, has taken this genre to its logical progression, with more layers to their sound and a more integrated approach to dance music. With this in mind, it doesn’t take long to discern modern DJ sensibilities behind their song craft; they shape blips and beeps into irresistible pop hooks with the expertise of beat-crafting EMT’s (Read: they have an acute sense of the “DP pulse”), and blend songs into each other seamlessly. This quality, blended with razor sharp, New Wave style guitar and your traditional airy synth accompaniment, imbues the music with a fresh aesthetic and addictive hip-gyrating properties. Like New Order, on another note, Cut Copy’s music serves just as well for make out seshes as it does for dance party extravaganzas. Just thought I’d throw that one out there…
And now, I’ll focus my attention more on the album at hand. In Ghost Colours…an interesting and thought-provoking name, but don’t think for too long—You’d be giving them more credit than (I think) they are even looking for. The music on this album falls far from the label of “heady,” and, unlike a lot of the post-punk bands Cut Copy draws upon for inspiration (e.g. Joy Division→New Order), they don’t care and don’t even aspire to such “heights.” As a progression from their debut album, Bright Like Neon Lights, In Ghost Colours marks a refinement to their approach. The songs are cleaner and more concise in their pop structure, and vocals take on a decidedly more central focus. While Dan Whitford, the group’s mastermind and chief vocalist, has some pretty decent pipes, the intent doesn’t seem to extend much beyond emphasizing the comforting and emotionally expressive qualities of the human voice; the lyrics are fairly banal, and primarily concern, believe it or not, love and dance music. This is perhaps most plainly evident on the opening track, “Feel the Love,” which is anchored by rhythmic acoustic guitar strumming and particularly melodic vocals. For those of you who are looking more for those electro-pop gems check out “Out There On the Ice” and “Nobody Lost, Nobody Found,” both of which have killer hooks (just listen to that chorus on “Nobody Lost, Nobody Found”—“ah ha haa, burn in the face of love”). “Hearts on Fire,” a song that has actually been out there on the net for quite some time, also exemplifies their electronic mastery, and I particularly like the sampling of those early 90’s style female-shrieking noises. New Order’s influence can be plainly heard on this album (for those who are curious as to whether my comparison is legit) with songs like “Unforgettable Season” and “Midnight Runner” demonstrating Cut Copy’s bright, poppy tendencies (these are also the songs I was referring to, in part, with the “make-out sesh” suggestion).
Ultimately, with In Ghost Colours Cut Copy has delivered another new and exciting take on their own brand of electronic pop. While I normally wait to buy albums in physical form, I couldn’t resist the instant gratification of buying the album on iTunes. Take from that what you will.

fujiya & miyagi
Fujiya & Miyagi are a trio out of Brighton. Their 2006 release, Transparent Things rose high on my end-of-year charts, while giving a nod to a Tostado hero, the Vlad man.
Their music is a little wonky and they often bite better known bands like Air and Underworld-- and a slew of other krautrockers-- but it's fun. Plus, they make the best videos on the block (ok, maaaybe tied with So-Me) since Peter Gabes.
Recently they teamed up with Bomb the Bass on a new track called Butterfingers. Enjoy the video and some F & M classics from years past.
My favorite:

To the pipes of pan
Today excavations of Stonehenge commenced after 50 years of inactivity. BBC reports that scientists are aiming to discover why workers transported the bluestones over 200 miles when they created it 4,500 years ago. They hope to strengthen the theory that the world wonder was a healing ground for the ill and injured. Personally I like to think Spinal Tap had it right with their interpretation...

Spalding get your foot off the boat!
Tom Perkins, the prominent Silicon Valley venture capitalist, is apparently looking to cash in one of his investments — but in this case, the investment is not a Web start-up but a high-tech superyacht. Mr. Perkins has put The Maltese Falcon up for sale, just two years after he first set sail on it.
Mr. Perkins, one of the founders of venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufied & Byers, reportedly spent at least $150 million on building the yacht. He has asked its builder, Perini Navi, to offer it for $181 million, according to Superyachttimes.com, which called it the “world’s most spectacular sailing yacht.”

smart oven
the Electrolux Inspiro uses high tech sensors to determine the necessary energy consumption/time needed to bring the food to the correct temperature. most ovens just measure the air temperature with a thermometer and regulate it with a thermostat. you just click on the category of food, how well done you want it and the oven does the rest.

art is everywhere
SerraGlia. a charismatic italian artEEst. a lot of pensive art, some goldsworthy-y nature art, and much more. Read his manifesto below.
Principles of Art:
The "art" is the capacity to understand and express the society. A good "artist" is someone who has a fervent imagination and an excellent technique for express-oneself. The "art" is for everyone and everyone can make it, but only a few of them, in reality, have a free-time for imagination. If all of us could have less job-time and more free-time for imagination we would lose all the meanings of the word "art".
Scope of SerraGlia:
Today the society offers a very little-free time to stimulate the imagination. To change the society one must have imagination. A man without the imagination is a death man, a society without the imagination can not evolve (lacks evolution). SerraGlia is a kind of process to create a favourable climate of sensibility to all pedestrians. Today is fundamental that every works communicates a message: this is the first condicion to arouse the sensation repressed by the present society.

Watch the whole thing, they get better and better...
On April 27, 2006, Corliss was arrested while attempting to jump from the observation deck of the Empire State Building. Soon after this incident, Corliss was fired from his job as host of the Discovery Channel program Stunt Junkies and banned from all future Discovery Networks projects. Corliss was subsequently charged with first- and second-degree reckless endangerment. While both reckless endangerment charges were dismissed by the trial judge before trial, the second-degree reckless endangerment charge was reinstated on appeal, and Corliss is currently facing trial on that charge. He faces up to one year in prison if convicted.
In April of 2007, the owners of the Empire State Building sued Corliss for $12 million in damages, claiming he had injured a security guard, damaged the building's reputation, and cost it money from lost business. On January 15, 2008, Corliss filed a $30 million counterclaim against the owners of the Empire State building, alleging unlawful imprisonment, defamation of character, emotional distress and loss of income

carbonated cucumber water
pepsi has released cucumber flavored soda in Japan. i bet it's delicious...think of the cucumber flavored water they give you at spas/salons, only carbonated. yummmmmm
they shouldn't have put PEPSI so big on the label, tho. at first i thought it was pepsi & cucumber mixed together, which would have surpassed the level of yuk-ness that vanilla coke did.

In certain circles, the prestige of a party can be gauged by the heft of its invitation: The honor of one’s presence at a royal wedding, for instance, might be requested on a card thick enough to double as a tea tray.
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has updated this notion for the opening of its Broad Contemporary Art Museum, a $156 million, 60,000-square-foot space partly paid for by billionaire art collector Eli Broad and designed by starchitect Renzo Piano. For the gala on February 9 (at the peak of Hollywood’s award show–driven social season), LACMA is sending out 4.5-inch-high models of JEFF KOON's monumental sculpture Cracked Egg (Red) (1994–2006), which will be part of BCAM’s inaugural show. The intended message—that this is a party not to be missed—seems to be hitting home. Disney chief Robert Iger and MGM head Harry Sloan are among the studio bigwigs who’ve snapped up tables, and RSVPs have been pouring in from New York, London and Europe when, generally, the only L.A. party that lures out-of-towners is the Vanity Fair Oscars bash. Elevator Etiquette
You know what really grinds my gears? I walk in my building this morning and head towards the elevators, I stroll over to hit the button to go up, the button then illuminates; I take a step back and wait patiently. So far so good. Then like 3 seconds later, this d-bag walks in and makes a point of hitting the button again, in a slow and assertive manner, well aware that the elevator is already on its way. He then confidently takes a step back to stand beside me, proud of himself for letting the elevator know that he'll also be coming along for the ride. Nice one.
This is the same guy who slid his hand in at the last second to keep the elevator door from closing yesterday, disregarding that the elevator was at full capacity and that there were seven other vators he could take.
I guess sometimes that Doritos snack pack and Red Bull just can't wait.

bauhaus

From 1919 to 1933, in Weimar, Dessau and then Berlin, the Bauhaus (literally, "house of construction") was much more than just a professional school of a new genre-it was a modern Utopia. Painters, teaching specialists, architects, urban planners, artisans, engineers, actors, musicians, photographers and designers worked together there on a new concept of everyday life. An experimental style became dominant-bare, functional and scrupulously clear-the style of the 20th century. book available for purchase here
also, definitely pick up tom wolfe's essay "From Bauhaus to Our House" if you haven't yet. a quick must read.

quidditch match televised @ amherst
just ran into the middlebury quidditch team at valentine. they are here because they played one of the first intercollegiate quidditch matches ever against Amherst at 7:30am. it was televised on the CBS Morning Show, too. I meant to wake up but its really rainy & gross here....in fact, I decided to skip my 10 10am microbio class @ umass because i didnt want to walk 2 mi in the rain...made it to val but then changed my mind and am sitting at val. now its snowing.
apparently middlebury is leading the movement to spread quidditch on the intercollegiate level a
nd playing seven schools in a tour right now. midd won the first two matches, amherst won the third. the amherst team was not experienced people..anyone was allowed to play on the team if they showed up to this meeting yesterday (all our friends were going to go but we missed the meeting).
i walked up to the midd table to ask them about the match, tey told me that the snitch can hit people. in the matches this morning he threw a few people down but there haven't been any epic hits yet. one of the guys, the captain, had a cape and a cane. i hope we can find the footage online in a few days.

resisting the kelly clarkson reference
i have hazel eyes and since i went on spring break they have changed from their winter browny to their summer greeny color. i like the greeny color better because it fluctuates shade more and has a ton of colors in it. sometimes in winter they'll get green if i wear a bright color or or something, but not too often. and usually i don't even notice.
i thought it had to do with the light around me being reflected in my eye but wasn't too sure so i googled. apparently no one else really knows, either. but here's geneticist Rick Sturm's explanation (from USA TODAY, written by April Holladay)
the bottom pic i found when i googled "hazel eyes" and shows a range of eye color that i thought was pretty.
Hazel is in the eye of the beholder; more on memory
Q: What exactly are hazel eyes, and what color are they? Rita Lichtenburg South Africa
A: It seemed like a simple question, when I first read it. Then I went to various sources, and found no consensus.
Hmmm. This is a question for a world-renown expert.
"The question of Hazel eye colour has haunted the literature," muses geneticist Rick Sturm, principal research fellow at the University of Queensland in Australia. "The fact is eye color (like skin and hair color) is a continuous spectrum — from the lightest shades of blue to the darkest brown/black."
Moreover, it's subjective. "Visual impressions of colour can change as often as you change the lighting conditions."
Also, hazel eyes, like blue eyes and all light eyes, reflect colors around them, as a pool reflects the sky.
Sturm and his team have studied adolescent twins to determine the genetic underpinnings of eye color. In the course of these studies, he's taken 1,937 eye photographs, and divided the group into three major eye-color definitions. Sixty-percent of the twins fall in the 'blue' category, 26% in 'g
reen/hazel' and 14% 'brown.'
"Surprisingly," 74% of the green/hazel eyes had a brown ring around the pupil. "This major pattern may explain a lot of eye color that is commonly referred to as Hazel."
These statistical findings are unpublished, and not yet accepted by peer review; they "only represent my opinion at this stage" says Sturm.
How do such eyes occur? Certainly the simple model we learned in school about brown-eye color being dominant over blue falls short of an explanation. Indeed that one-gene theory is kaput. There is no single gene for eye color. Now, we know two major genes and other minor ones account for the tremendous variation of human eye color, says Sturm, part of the team making this discovery, reported in 2007.
The gene OCA2 produces a protein that allows the hair, skin and eyes to make pigment (called melanin) that colors these body parts. The more pigment in the eye, the darker it is. Much pigment results in brown eyes; little pigment causes blue eyes.
Furthermore, a change happens fairly frequently to the pigment protein under the control of the OCA2 gene. When the protein changes, its function changes. It makes a different pigment that then colors the eyes green or hazel. Sturm likens this process to "changing a light bulb from brown to green."

so-me like it hot

“I wanted to play around with Busy P,” explains So-Me, as to why portraits are the focus for his new exhibit at Toronto’s Studio Gallery. The 22 prints on display are dominated by various incarnations of Ed Banger patriarch Busy P (Pedro Winter), and So-Me’s obvious muse. “He’s, like, super iconic. He’s very charismatic, very strong, very goofy and tall, and I think he’s just a funny character.”
Canada might seem an unlikely place to make a North American debut, but the choice came from a desire to have a small show at the new Studio Gallery, an intimate space that has hosted infamous and exclusive after-parties for the likes of Daft Punk, Diplo, MSTRKRFT, and those on the Ed Banger label.
When asked about future projects, he says, not laughing, “I should do bed sheets or a movie. The world is full of things to do. I like switching between things, switching fields.”
“So Me: Portraits” runs from March 21 to May 22 at Studio Gallery 294 College Street, Toronto and is available online at Studio.to. (via KidzbyColette)

Alice in Wonderland
TextArc is "a visual represention of a text—the entire text (twice!) on a single page. A funny combination of an index, concordance, and summary; it uses the viewer's eye to help uncover meaning."
Brad Pasey created TextArc over the course of a year. he is an artist and "sometimes professor at Columbia". check out his site, he's done some pretty cool stuff.
Alice in Wonderland was an MIT media lab project using TextArc. it's kind of a puzzle at first glance but once you play around with it you'll catch on. very clever, though. dr. ott would love it.

Nerdbags

PCH and I were chatting about this over the wkend... and here it is today, all over the internets.
Our ideal looks were certainly not nerdy, but you get the idea. Mine was the JFK Jr look; Pete liked a variation, the Tom Selleck. Either way, phenomenal looks for guys who like having necks.
"You don’t want to be the guy in the gym with the 200-pound bench-press guy. Not just because those guys are generally assholes, but doing that kind of workout is going to make you look like one of those assholes. It’s maybe embarrassing to admit that degree of self-consciousness about it, but even in college I tailored my workouts to look like the guy who looks fit but doesn’t spend too much time in the gym."
